YouTube just expanded automatic location tagging on Shorts to travel and restaurant videos. In practice: your short videos can now display a clickable link to a real-world place, with zero extra work, as long as you clearly name your destination in the title and description.

The observation

In early September 2026, YouTube widened its automatic location-tagging system for Shorts, previously limited to a handful of categories, to include travel and restaurant videos. The mechanism: the algorithm scans the title, description, audio transcript and even the on-screen visuals to identify a real place, then displays a clickable overlay link to that location directly in the player.

In other words, a Short showing a hike through a canyon or a seasonal menu at a countryside restaurant can now be automatically linked to that exact place on Google Maps, with no manual tagging required from the creator.

Why it matters for independent businesses

For a hotel, campsite or restaurant operating outside major cities, this update shifts one specific thing: local discoverability no longer depends solely on a well-optimized Google Business Profile or the right hashtags. A single, clearly named video becomes an additional entry point to your business.

This mechanism particularly benefits businesses that already publish regular on-the-ground content: behind-the-scenes clips, guided walk-throughs, seasonal dishes, or activities on offer. Every Short becomes a potential geo-tagged doorway to your property, on top of its usual role as engaging content.

Another advantage: unlike a sponsored post or a listing you have to optimize manually, this tagging is free and automatic. It simply rewards clear, precise naming.

3 concrete actions to implement this week

  1. Name your locations precisely in the title and description. Skip generic titles (« Our restaurant ») in favor of explicit mentions (« Lunch on the terrace, mountain view, Provence »). The more identifiable the place name, the better the automatic recognition works.
  2. Film shots that show the place, not just the product. A recognizable facade, a panoramic view, a visible sign: these visual cues help the algorithm confirm the location detected in the text.
  3. Publish one « place » Short per week, alongside your usual content. A dedicated format, a walk around the property, a village tour, a terrace panorama, maximizes your odds of appearing in geo-tagged results, in parallel with your regular product or service posts.

Our take at BMAX

This update confirms a broader trend: platforms are increasingly connecting video content to real-world places, to better answer searches like « where to do X near me. » For an independent hospitality business, this is a zero-cost opportunity: it only requires a small adjustment to how you name and film your videos, no new tools or budget needed.

We recommend building this habit into your filming routine now, before the practice becomes standard and the first-mover advantage fades.
