TikTok has just rolled out its « Nearby Feed, » a fully location-based content feed, in four European markets including France. For an independent hotel, campsite, or restaurant, this means one simple thing: you can now be discovered without a large following, just by posting regular, geotagged content.

The observation

TikTok has launched its « Nearby Feed » in the UK, France, Italy, and Germany. A new tab now appears on the app’s home screen, surfacing content tied to a user’s geographic area once they opt in to share location: restaurants, events, tourist activities, and local businesses.

Ranking in this feed is not based on follower count. It relies on three factors: the location tied to the content, its topic, and its freshness. It’s the same logic as a Google Business Profile listing, applied to short-form video.

Why it matters for independent businesses

For a tourism business or restaurant, this shifts one key variable: community size no longer gates local visibility. An account with 200 followers that posts regular geotagged content can surface in a nearby tourist’s or resident’s feed just as easily as an account with 50,000 followers.

Early observations from marketing teams tracking this rollout point to a meaningful lift in local discovery for accounts that consistently tag their location. The signal is clear: consistency and geographic precision now matter more than virality.

For a footfall-driven business (campsite, guesthouse, restaurant, leisure activity), this opens a free visibility channel that complements Google Business Profile and Instagram, right at the moment travelers are planning or living their stay.

3 concrete actions to implement this week

1. Turn on and consistently tag your location. Every video should be tied to the precise venue (business name or town), not just the wider region. That tag is what triggers appearance in the local feed.

2. Post « right now » content. The feed rewards freshness: a video showing today’s atmosphere, a last-minute opening, or an activity in progress is more likely to surface than generic content posted once a month.

3. Think « useful to the passer-by. » Unlike content built to nurture an existing community, Nearby Feed content is seen by people looking for an immediate answer: where to eat tonight, what to do tomorrow morning. Filming today’s dish, an available room, or an activity starting within the hour outperforms institutional content.

Our take at BMAX

This launch confirms a trend we’ve been tracking for months: local discovery is shifting from traditional search engines to video platforms. After Google Business Profile, after Instagram, TikTok is now building a free, location-based visibility channel.

For our hotel, campsite, and restaurant clients, our recommendation is simple: don’t wait for the feed to fill up with competitors before claiming your spot. An active, well-tagged account today gets a head start on a channel that’s still far from saturated.
